In the Now: The Role of Arts Education in Developing Belonging

Friday, 7 March 12:40-13:40

This session will explore how arts education can foster a sense of belonging and support the holistic development of each child. Participants will learn how engaging in the arts nurtures students’ social-emotional growth, offering avenues for self-expression, collaboration, and empathy - essential skills for both personal and academic success.

The session will provide actionable strategies for embedding arts education into school culture to strengthen community bonds. A vibrant arts culture within schools helps create a supportive environment where students feel seen and valued. This sense of belonging is crucial, as it encourages students to participate fully in school life, promoting higher engagement and well-being. Drawing on Eckhart Tolle's concept of "being in the now," the session will also highlight how the arts offer students the opportunity to engage deeply in the present moment, through creative expression, whether on stage, canvas or through music.

Key takeaways will include methods for integrating arts into daily school life to enhance engagement, boost student wellbeing, and create an inclusive space where every child feels seen and valued. By addressing the interrelation between the arts and a child’s need for emotional safety and connection, this session underscores the importance of belonging in shaping a meaningful learning experience for all students.
