How the British International Education system supports the Deliberate Design of Educating the Whole Child

The session uses the history of Lucerne International School as a case study to highlight the benefits for students of the British International School Curriculum and how it is uniquely appropriate to a personalised learning programme.

Baig will discuss the challenges of starting a school and his experience of implementing the US, IB and international British curricula in different international schools around the world, highlighting the similarities and differences between the systems. The talk will cover the benefits for the wellbeing of students and staff by following this curriculum. The talk will directly address the key themes of the conference by exploring the design thinking around the setup of the school’s programme as well as how belonging and diversity are embraced by this personalised learning approach. Students with diverse needs such as mental and physical health issues are still able to access their education, allowing the school to meet the diversity of learners’ situations. This creates an environment of belonging – where students are accepted as their authentic selves in a supportive environment thereby deliberately educating the whole child.

With Baig's unique experience of different curricula, he offers an insightful analysis of the International British curriculum with humour and an interesting journey to share with the delegates and share the journey of creating a personalised learning school to meet the needs of students who otherwise could not have their needs met through the traditional school system.

Lucerne International School

Lucerne International School was established in 2021 as a blended-learning, or hybrid school, with students attending school to work with subject specialists while following online courses. The school was deliberately designed around the British International curriculum of iGCSEs and A-levels as these courses allow the flexibility as well as the breadth and depth of study to provide a comprehensive programme to prepare students to enter universities worldwide. The Pearson Edexcel international GCSEs and international A levels provide a modular exams programme allowing students to spread the summative assessment of their progress across a timeline that suits their individual circumstances. It is this flexibility that is essential for our hybrid-learning approach and has allowed our students to achieve outstanding exam grades over the last 3 academic years.

In addition, the additional component of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) in collaboration with the Duke of Edinburgh Award allows students a comprehensive programme of academic and personal skills development with service learning, without unnecessarily overburdening students with mandatory components.

For these reasons, the pre-university blended-learning programme of Lucerne International School follows the British International Curriculum as being the best fit for our forward-thinking school approach.
