School: International School of Berne
Position start date: January or August 2027
Application closing date: 24 April 2026
ABOUT THE SCHOOL
3–18 years | Coeducational | Day School | ~300 students | IB World School
Founded in 1961, the International School of Berne (ISBerne) was originally established to serve the diplomatic community of the city and canton of Bern, Switzerland. Since then, the school has grown from just 40 students to nearly 300, reflecting the region’s increasing international profile.
Today, ISBerne welcomes both international and local Swiss families seeking a supportive and globally minded education.
While English is the school’s main language of instruction, it is not the first language for more than 60% of students. This linguistic diversity contributes to a vibrant community representing over 45 nationalities and provides students with a genuinely international learning environment.
ISBerne has a long-standing commitment to international education. The school introduced the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme in 1995 and was authorised to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP) in 2007. In addition, the school is accredited by CIS and NEASC.
From 2026, ISBerne will introduce a pathway in the Swiss national curriculum, Lehrplan 21, from Grade 1, primarily taught in German. This builds on the German–English approach already offered in Kindergarten and creates an additional pathway for local families.
In April 2017, the school relocated to a purpose-built campus in Gümligen, just outside Bern. The campus design reflects the school’s commitment to community, with connected and flexible learning spaces that support collaboration and inclusion.
ISBerne serves a largely mobile international community, with many families staying for an average of three to four years. This contributes to a welcoming, close-knit environment where new families quickly feel at home.
ISBerne is part of Pansophic Learning, an international education organisation headquartered in Virginia, USA, with schools and programmes across Europe, the Middle East, and beyond.
