Profile: The role and responsibility of the Deputy Head is to support and assist the Head of School with strategic planning and in managing, leading and developing the school.

Responsibilities: The Deputy Head supports the Head of School in joint leadership and takes a major role in 

  • Being a positive influence on the climate and culture of the school and an example at all times
  • Ensuring the vision for the school is clearly articulated, shared, understood and acted upon by all 
  • Formulating the aims and objectives of the school
  • Establishing policies for achieving these aims and objectives 
  • Managing staff and resources

Teaching and learning/ curriculum 

  • Playing a major part in securing excellent classroom practice across the school
  • Encouraging innovation, the development of independent learning, cross curricular initiatives and the further use of technologies
  • Maintaining a programme of monitoring and evaluation of schemes of work, delivery of the curriculum and the quality of teaching and learning 
  • Have an expert knowledge of curriculum trends, issues and changes
  • Monitoring all aspects of visits and outdoor learning so that there are engaging, relevant, enjoyable and memorable learning opportunities beyond the classroom for every student

School improvement

  • Support and secure the commitment of others to the vision, direction and policies of the school
  • Work in partnership with the HoS in managing the school through strategic planning, the formulation of policy and delivery of strategy, ensuring management decisions are implemented

Pastoral Care

  • Together with the School Counsellor, assess and review the specific pastoral care needs of students and develop a strategy that aligns with our offer and is embedded within our curriculum moving forward
  • Play a key role in the maintenance of good order and acceptable behaviour of the students
  • Support staff in matters of discipline

Staff 

  • To actively contribute to good management practice by ensuring positive staff participation, effective communication and procedures
  • With the HoS, lead the processes involved in monitoring, evaluating and challenging the quality of teaching and learning taking place throughout the school, including lesson observations to ensure consistency and quality

Behaviour and communication

  • To be the main point of contact for parents, offering advice and guidance regarding general academic progress and concerns 
  • To be a visible presence in the school supporting students and colleagues throughout the day 
  • To provide training and support which ensures that the Positive Behaviour Guidelines are embedded and consistent across the school
  • To track and monitor student attendance in line with the attendance policy

Administration 

  • To participate in the recruitment and deployment of teaching and non-teaching staff of the school
  • To support colleagues in planning and managing excursions and events
  • To conduct consultations for potential families

Qualifications and Experience

  • Previous experience in an administrative role within education 
  • Experience in pedagogical leadership roles
  • BA/ MA in education or similar
  • Fluency in English and German
  • A very good understanding of the UK international system (IGCSE/A levels)
  • Very high level of administrative efficiency and the ability to communicate clearly in various contexts
  • Commitment to teamwork, flexibility, empathy and confidentially
