Meeting for Principals/Heads of Elementary International schools within Switzerland

Dear Head of Elementary School,

On Friday May 16 2008, I wish to invite you to the International School of Berne to participate in a meeting solely for Principals/Heads of Elementary International schools within Switzerland.

To help us plan, please email our secretary Mrs. Ursi Grossenbacher at: ursi.grossenbacher@isberne.ch

with:

  • Your confirmation before April 25 2008
  • Suggestions for our agenda. Possible ideas could include Foreign Languages Programmes within our Elementary Schools, Mother Tongue Programmes, and Scheduling.

The suggested agenda is as follows:

  • 10:00: Begin with a tour of the International School of Berne including refreshments.
  • 11:00: Introductions in our off-site meeting room located in the Bartschi Haus.
  • Professional Development planning for our teaching teams for 2008-2009. Can we support each other?
  • Purpose of future SGIS Elementary Principals meetings.
  • Meeting frequency for 2008-2009.
  • 13:00-14:00 : Restaurant lunch provided.
  • 14:00-16:00: Continuation of common concerns, including a sharing session of a 'best practice' idea from ISBerne.

As we monitor the suggestions, we will modify the agenda to best suit our needs.

Parking at ISBerne is very limited, therefore we are strongly encouraging the use of Public Transport. We are approximately 20 minutes from the Bern train station. Our school is located at Gümligen.

Please bring diaries and calendars for the 2008-2009 school year.

Looking forward to meeting all of you and establishing a potentially positive working partnership for years to come.

With regards,
Jason Barton
Elementary Principal

The Early Learning Friends (Elfs) Workshop: Unlocking the Reading Process

Here are the details of our next Elfs meeting, which will be held in Vevey on Sat. 31 st May, 2008.

Margaret Shinde will lead a training day on reading in the Early Years.

We will look at the stages of reading and how to best support children in the development of reading skills.
We will unlock some of the strategies we can adopt as teachers to encourage reading, from school-wide initiatives, classroom practice and individual contact.

The day will be interactive and there will be a chance for questions and discussions.

Margaret is an early years and literacy teacher at the International School of Monts-de-Corsier and has worked as a literacy consultant in London. She led a session on writing two years ago for ELFs .

SGIS has kindly offered to help fund this workshop and we shall therefore only be charging each participant for food, which will cost approx. 30 Sfr. per person.

The day will begin at 10.00 a.m. with coffee (Workshop begin: 10.30.a.m.) and will end at 2 p.m. It will include lunch provided by teachers at Monts - de - Corsier school.

Please let me know by April 25 th how many people will be attending from your school together with a contact name for correspondence in connection with this meeting.

If you are interested in attending, please contact: erdmann.gluck@hispeed.ch

The Group, ELFS, ( The Early Learning Friends), was set up in April 1998 by a group of Kindergarten and Preschool teachers from some of the main International Schools in Switzerland who recognized the need for regular job alike sessions amongst professional Early learning teachers.

Its aim originally was to give Early Learning teachers the opportunity to visit each others schools and to share ideas on various aspects of Early Learning education.

Over the years, the group has grown to include many small and larger international schools in Switzerland and, with this expansion the desire for workshops led by professionals in the field as well continued job alike sessions has grown.

The Group meets two to three times a year, varying the meeting place each time. We are a non profit making organization.

If your school is interested in joining ELFS, or if you are interested in being sent more details, please let me know.
