She has co-authored many books, including Teaching Globally: Reading the World through Literature, Critical Content Analysis of Children’s and Young Adult Literature, Creating Classrooms for Authors and Inquirers, Teacher Study Groups, and Learning Together through Inquiry. She is director of Worlds of Words, an initiative to build bridges across global cultures through children’s literature, and is a past President of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY).

The Workshop

Encouraging Conceptually-Based Inquiry
Inquiry is a conceptually-based, rather than topic-based, approach to curriculum, and yet a focus on topics and knowledge often overshadow the big ideas that underlie our teaching. A conceptual frame for inquiry should be the initial focus of attention in any unit or lesson and then be woven throughout our teaching in powerful ways. We will explore a range of instructional strategies to teach for conceptual understanding through inquiry.
