The Workshop

Engaging Children in Critical Thinking through Dialogue

Many students have learned to read and think on the surface. They add a comment to the discussion, taking their turn and saying just enough so the teacher moves on to someone else. The fast pace of school works against time for thoughtful contemplation. This workshop focuses on dialogue strategies that invite students to delve more deeply into experiences to identify the issues they consider significant and to think with others about these issues through dialogue. Our focus will be on dialogue around literature but the dialogue strategies we will explore can be used with any experience to more students from surface comments to critical dialogue.
