Conference 2016

Hosted by La Côte International School, March 11th and 12th, 2016

Mind if I Learn ?

Our conference this year entitled ‘Mind if I Learn’, is intended to offer practical strategies and tools that will allow educators to improve the teaching and learning process. Central to this, is understanding the connection between the brain, cognitive development, learning experiences and the environment, in the development of the mind of the future.

It is important for teachers to know how students learn, and what they can do improve their learning, so SGIS has tried to focus the programme on issues that have a direct impact on the student in the classroom whatever their age, ability and background.

Our experienced educators and speakers will challenge your thinking in a variety of ways, and offer tools and strategies for curriculum and lesson design.

La Côte International School, our hosts for the conference, have guaranteed us a warm and friendly welcome. Thank you for hosting us and thank you to the hard working organizing committee and the exhibitors.

“What are you trying to say?”
Language, communications and technology in the 21st century learning environment

Over the years, SGIS has endeavoured to ensure that the Annual SGIS Conference themes and topics are both relevant and stimulating for our members. Also we have been increasingly aware of the importance for the Conference environment to be conducive to provoking reflection, encouraging delegates’ active participation, promoting debate, and generating enquiry. Moreover, it is our firm conviction that it is a unique opportunity to maintain and, even more importantly, to foster interaction between our teaching communities at all levels thus maximizing the benefits for all those in our care.

Understanding the child: the student revisited

At its annual conference this year, SGIS has tried to focus the programme on issues that will be felt by teachers to be directly relevant to their classroom teaching, whatever the age, ability and background of the students they teach.

Through a stimulating programme of speaker-led sessions, a wide-ranging exhibition and great opportunities for networking, participants will be offered the opportunity to reflect on their practice, to explore new ideas, and to find both encouragement and challenge.

Many Languages, One School

The human ability to adapt and to acquire new languages, whether English, Mandarin or Swahili, is central to success in the modern world, and central to the existence and everyday function of all educational establishments, and international schools more than most. EFL, EAL, ESL, call it what you wish – this is an element of our schools that we must get right.

“Doing more with less”

Teachers and educational administrators are constantly faced with the challenge of offering first-class educational experiences in the best possible learning environment within a complex framework of material and financial constraints. These limitations of space, funding, resources, time and staffing can appear to be daunting obstacles at times, yet they also provide opportunities for creativity and innovation. The recent worldwide economic turbulence and the increasing focus on the urgent need for a responsible global approach to climate change further emphasise that we must review our dependence on resources of all kinds.
